Chinese new year (CNY) is around the corner and the festive feeling is happening everywhere around the world. This year in Arumdalu we want to explore a unique CNY culture specifically in Singapore and Malaysia, Yusheng!
Yusheng (鱼生), famously known as a prosperity toss, is a teochew-style fish salad, is a unique culture during Chinese New Year, famous in Malaysia & Singapore. Yusheng contains various types of vegetables and fishes to represent abundance of wealth and fortunes. All dinner at the table must stand up and toss the Yusheng together up in the air with chopstick while saying their wishes for the New Year out loud. It is believed that the height of the toss reflects the diner's growth of abundance, fortune, & prosperity! interesting right?
The writer personally finds Yusheng philosophically exciting as it represents a togetherness of family in “tossing” the growth of abundance, fortune, and prosperity, showing how sharing should be done and how we should aim higher for a new year with bigger hope, faith, and love!
In Arumdalu for February, the month of love and festive, we create our version of Yusheng with the freshest local ingredients and most unique combination. You will love it! So book your place now to eat our special February meal with a Yusheng in Arumdalu's Sahang Resto!
